Inspiration
I absolutely love Matt Daniels' award-winning Longest Vocabulary in Hip Hop and have thought about language analysis projects ever since. I thought the Republican debate might be a fun arena to
explore language, although I wasn't the first. Jack Shafer wrote about Donald Trump talking like a third grader on Politico a day before inspiration struck me. I still think it's fun to see all candidates stacked up against each other.
Data Provenance
I used Washington Post's transcript of the August 6 GOP debate and calculated Flesch-Kincaid reading grade levels using this calculator. Example books for each grade level are from the excellent Scholastic Book Wizard.
