Endangered Safari

Pictorial Interactive and Animation

174 African mammals are revealed through a suite of publications

The Endangered Safari project introduces all of the large African mammals. It began as an interactive (preview above) and a static poster (preview at right).
The project encodes many data elements in its original  silhouette illustrations to show: animal size, family, population trend, geographic range, and threatened species status.
It was the basis for the short film Are gazelles endangered? which won the inaugural AAAS Science Data Stories video contest. See Endangered Safari's design essay for more details.
